by | Nov 3, 2025 | Floor Cleaning

A good, clean floor can really make a whole room — it’s one of the first things you notice when you walk inside.

One popular but affordable option that makes a good impression? Hybrid flooring!

This modern floor material combines the best of laminate and vinyl flooring: aesthetics, sturdiness, and water resistance. And just like both materials, hybrid floors are easy to maintain — with the right methods.

Knowing how to clean hybrid flooring helps your floors last longer and look better. Sweep or vacuum regularly, and mop the floors with warm water and a pH-neutral floor cleaner.

When your floors sparkle, your whole home feels that much cleaner. Put that microfibre mop to work so your hybrid floors impress anyone who walks over them!

First Off — What is Hybrid Flooring?

As the name suggests, hybrid flooring is made from a mix of durable materials, usually a plastic composite plus limestone or wood.

Each floor plank will have four layers:

  • Protective layer: Resistant to scuffs and scratches
  • Aesthetic layer: Design layer with wood or stone look
  • Core layer: Provides stability and water resistance
  • Backing/underlay: For acoustic and thermal insulation

If you’re looking up how to clean “hybrid laminate flooring,” “hybrid timber flooring,” or “hybrid vinyl flooring,” those are all the same thing — hybrid floors!

How Often to Clean Hybrid Floors

Sweep or vacuum your hybrid floors once or twice a week. For floors in high-traffic areas — or if you have small kids or pets — you’ll need to vacuum more often.

Damp mop hybrid floors once a week for deep cleaning.

Tackle any stains or spills immediately so they don’t set into the floor material.

Or let our reliable house cleaners keep your hybrid floors looking pristine, alongside the rest of your home.

Before Cleaning Your Hybrid Flooring

Hybrid floors are sturdy yet easy to care for — as long as you use the right cleaning methods and tools!

Here’s a rundown of what to use when cleaning and what to avoid so you don’t damage your floors.

What to clean hybrid flooring with

For removing dust and loose dirt, stick to a soft-bristled broom, a dust mop, or a vacuum cleaner. These are gentler on floors and won’t scuff or scratch the material.

The best floor cleaner for hybrid floors is a pH-neutral product, like a mild detergent or a floor cleaner for timber/hard floors.

Use one bucket for your cleaning solution and another for your rinse water.

Meanwhile, the best mop for hybrid flooring is a microfibre mop — ideally a spin model, which makes it easier to wring out excess moisture.

What not to use when cleaning hybrid flooring

For mopping, stay away from string or sponge mops! These aren’t as absorbent as microfibre, so they often push dirty water around or leave streaks.

Avoid abrasive cleaners like steel wool or scouring pads, which could create scuff marks that trap dirt later on.

Do not use harsh chemicals (like bleach) or acidic cleaners (like vinegar), which can strip or damage the protective coating. Skip any wax- or oil-based products as well, since they can leave a residue or dull the finish.

Routine Cleaning for Hybrid Floors

Sweep, dry mop, or vacuum a few days a week to minimise dust and dirt buildup on hybrid floors!

If you’re sweeping, use a soft broom with synthetic bristles so you don’t scuff the surface. Start from the corner furthest from the exit and work on one section at a time.

Dry mopping is another gentle way to remove dirt. It’s particularly effective for picking up pet dander, dust, and other small debris that a broom may not get.

Use a flat microfibre dust mop and make slow, even passes from one side of the room to another to trap the dirt. Every so often, shake the mop head over the rubbish bin.

If you plan to vacuum your hybrid floors, use the correct settings or accessories! Check if your vacuum has a soft brush roller or a hard floor setting, which will help prevent scratches.

Deep Cleaning Hybrid Flooring

The best way to clean hybrid flooring is to mop with a mild detergent or a pH-neutral floor cleaning product.

If you’re using a commercial cleaner, dilute the product according to instructions. Don’t use too much, or you could end up with a residue that leaves your floor feeling sticky even after mopping!

Otherwise, make a DIY hybrid floor cleaner by mixing 1/2 to 1 tsp of mild detergent per 3 litres of warm water.

Dip your microfibre mop into the cleaning solution, then wring it out so it’s just damp — you don’t want the floors to get too wet. Begin mopping the floor with even, back-and-forth strokes and gentle pressure.

Rinse the mop frequently so you’re not pushing dirty water around, and change the mop water or cleaning solution when it gets murky.

To clean the grooves in hybrid flooring, try a soft-bristled brush with soapy water! That should get into the groove or grain lines and scrub any dirt off.

Afterwards, wash off any residue with a fresh, damp mop and clean water. Then go over the hybrid floorboards with a dry cloth or mop to remove excess moisture.

Let the floors air dry, and open the windows or switch on an electric fan to help speed up the process.

Removing Stains from Hybrid Flooring

Clean spills immediately so the mess doesn’t set into your floors! Otherwise, the stain becomes harder to wash off later on.

Remove any solids with a paper towel, then blot — don’t rub! — any liquids with a damp cloth. For larger messes, use a large towel or a mop head.

You can clean hybrid flooring stains (especially when fresh) with warm water and mild detergent. Use a damp cloth or soft sponge to scrub the area.

For more stubborn stains, try a little rubbing alcohol or a thin paste of baking soda and water. Let the paste sit for a few moments before scrubbing the area clean with a damp sponge.

Wipe off the residue with a clean cloth dampened in fresh water, then dry the area.

Tips for Keeping Hybrid Flooring Clean and Scuff-Free

Routine cleaning helps keep hybrid floors looking their best! But there are other things you can do to prevent staining or scratching.

Put floor mats near your entryways to brush off dirt before it gets inside. Alternatively, keep indoor shoes or slippers by the door so you can change into clean footwear!

Place felt pads under the legs of heavy furniture so you don’t get dents or scuff marks on hybrid floorboards. Avoid rubber furniture pads as these can leave permanent marks.

When moving things around, do not allow furniture legs to drag over the surface.

Keep pet nails neatly trimmed or clipped so they don’t scrape the hybrid planks. You can also place rugs in areas your pets frequent.

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may discolour or fade hybrid planks. Window treatments like blinds or curtains will help protect the appearance of your floors.

Got more questions about keeping hybrid floors spotless?

We’ve rounded up some things people commonly ask about maintaining their floors at home.

Hybrid flooring vs laminate flooring vs vinyl flooring

Hybrid, laminate, and vinyl are similar but not the same things! Hybrid flooring is a mix of the best qualities of both vinyl and laminate.

Laminate floors are made of several layers, including a wood fibre or high-density fibreboard layer. They are not very water-resistant, but can be embossed or textured to mimic natural wood and stone.

Vinyl floors (say, luxury vinyl plank flooring) have synthetic layers, such as PVC or fibreglass. They’re more water-resistant than laminate, but appear less realistic.

Hybrid floors have synthetic and wood-based (or limestone-based) layers. A wood plastic composite (WPC) hybrid floor mixes recycled wood and plastic, while a stone plastic composite (SPC) floor uses compressed limestone.

And of course, timber floors are a different material entirely! These are made of real wood, whether in planks or processed sheets.

Can you clean hybrid floors with vinegar?

No, you shouldn’t use vinegar to clean hybrid flooring unless the manufacturer says it’s safe.

Vinegar is an acidic compound, so it can etch, discolour, or degrade the finish on your hybrid floorboards.

Can you steam mop hybrid flooring?

No, you cannot use a steam mop on hybrid flooring! (Nor a steam cleaner, either.)

While hybrid floors are durable, steam mops reach temperatures (above 120ºC) that are higher than the material can tolerate. The heat and moisture could cause warping, swelling, or other damage.

Excess moisture seeping into the floor surface can also lead to mould or mildew.

Can you use Pine O Cleen on hybrid flooring?

It isn’t recommended to use Pine O Cleen disinfectant on hybrid floors. The main ingredients include citric acid, which can degrade the protective layer or discolour the material.

Stick to pH-neutral cleaners or dedicated hybrid floor cleaners.
