10 Items You Should Never Flush Down The Toilet

by | Mar 27, 2021 | House Cleaning

Have you ever thrown an item or two in your toilet? It can’t be helped. It’s just too convenient, after all. However, this may immediately turn into a messy situation that would lead to an embarrassing call to a plumber!

The toilet can get rid of your biggest worries, but if you try to flush down the wrong items, then it may just become your worst nightmare. Lucky for you, we’ve got exactly what you need in order to prevent this disaster – a list of things not to flush down the toilet!

1.  Medication or Drugs

We know that TV shows make flushing down medications and drugs look easy. Well, it is. However, the problem is that these substances do not break down well in water. This causes contamination, which may lead to toxic environmental effects.

2. Band-Aids

There are two things that make band-aids bad for your toilet. First, most band-aids are plastic – meaning they would most likely end up as a pollutant. Remember that flushing plastic down the toilet is never a good thing. Another bad thing about band-aids is their adhesive property. Bandages may stick to other materials and cause bigger clogs while stuck on your pipe.

3. Condoms

Condoms do not break down in the water and are stretchable. They may trap air and water that would block up your pipe. If you’re lucky enough to avoid that, then the condom would go down to pollute the water system. A better practice would be to cover it in tissue, and throw it in the rubbish bin.

4. Hair

This is perhaps one of the most common and most problematic things that you should never flush down the toilet. Hair can accumulate or get stuck on other materials. It may also create a net or turn into a ball, blocking your pipes and creating a bad odour. On top of that, hair floats and it would never dissolve in water!

5. Feminine Hygiene

Feminine products such as tampons and napkins are designed to absorb as much liquid as possible. With the presence of a lot of water, they will expand a lot bigger than their normal size. This would make your toilet throw the water back at you. To prevent this, strictly throw your feminine products in rubbish bins only, but don’t forget to cover it up with plastic or tissue first!

6. Cigarette Butts

When flushed down the toilet, cigarette butts cause great harm to the environment. With their toxic chemicals, the affected water system would be contaminated. Cigarettes are also small and buoyant, so there’s a huge chance that they would come back up! To dispose of your cigarette butts properly, douse them with a bit of water, then throw in your rubbish bin.

7. Dental Floss

You may think that a single strand of floss can’t possibly hurt your toilet, right? Well, imagine it accumulating as it gets stuck on the pipes. It is not biodegradable, so it can eventually turn into a net or ball that would catch other materials. That would cause an unpleasant odour on your clogged pipe!

8. Gum

No matter how much you chew gum, it just doesn’t break down! The same goes when it’s in water. When you flush it down the toilet, it would just get stuck and accumulate other debris, creating a clog in your pipes.

 9. Tissues

Toilet paper is usually disposed of in the loo, so is it better to flush tissues down the toilet? Can you flush tissue down the toilet? The answer to both questions is no. Tissues do not break down on the water, they are designed to absorb it. If you flush it down, chances are it would block up your drain.

10. Bleach

This may come as a bit of a surprise since bleach is commonly used for cleaning toilets, but it is actually not advisable. Bleach is known to damage porcelain and it may also destroy plastic fittings. It is better to use warm soapy water or other less strong alternatives.

Save yourself from frantically searching “how to unclog a toilet” by avoiding these items. Remember, when in doubt, never flush down the toilet and use your rubbish bin.
