How To Interview A Housekeeper In Sydney

A housekeeper can be a lifesaver if you’re looking to make your life easier and free up your time to do other things. It can be a little challenging to get the right house cleaner Sydney that is a fit for your home especially if you don’t know what to ask them when they come in to interview. The process doesn’t have to be painstaking though because, with a few guidelines in mind, you can make it easy and find your perfect housekeeper.

Prepare Your House For The Cleaning Interview

A good start when you’re about to interview your potential housekeeper is to ensure that your space is ready for the conversation. Now you don’t have to go and set up an entire office space in the name of professionalism. This simply means you can help the interviewee feel comfortable by setting up expectations of the interview. You can start off by introducing yourself, the specs of your home and the type of tasks you’re looking to have done. Try not to throw long, winding questions at the housekeeper rather keeping them to simple inquiries into their abilities. If you plan on taking notes during the interview, let them know so that you don’t seem distracted during the interview. And remember simple hospitality offering them something to drink before you kick off the interview.

Get To Know The Cleaners Experience

The first phase of the interview should be a get-to-know-you process where you try to establish a little of the type of person they are and their interests. This is important because it helps you establish the initial stages of trust that you will need to carry your working relationship forward. You can ask questions such as:

  • Tell me a little about yourself
  • What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
  • What do you find most challenging about this type of work?
  • What is your ideal working environment?

More than trying to establish whether or not they can do the job, you’re simply trying to get a sense of the type of person they are.

Clarify Their Cleaning Checklist

Once you have gotten past the initial phase, you can dive into the nitty-gritty of the tasks you expect to have your housekeeper perform. When asking these questions, you’re looking to see if they have the knowledge and experience of keeping a home. You want to be clear in what your expectations are but also flexible enough that you actually find someone who is able to fit your home. If you’re too stringent on everything, it could be impossible to find a housekeeper unless you’re hiring yourself. A few questions you can ask are:

  • How many years of experience do you have?
  • What are some household tasks that you aren’t comfortable performing?
  • Are you comfortable working in a home with pets? (If you have them)
  • Do you know how to operate cleaning machines? (Vacuums, dishwashers, steam cleaners)
  • Do you have experience working in a house with children/pets?

With your potential candidate, you want answers that inspire confidence in you. If they look unsure about the responses, they’re giving it is possible they are lying or are providing answers that aren’t wholly true. You want to be flexible when asking this series of questions, but you also want to make sure they are capable and comfortable with the work. You could also make these questions specific to certain cleaning methods you prefer in your home so you can see the true extent of the housekeeper’s experience. It goes without saying that the more experience they have, the more assurance you have that the work you need to be done will not be daunting for them.

Ask Your “What If” Domestic Cleaning Related Questions

While it is not possible to anticipate every scenario your housekeeper may face on the job, there are some you can pose that will tell you how they react to high-stress situations. These questions are especially important if you plan to have your housekeeper responsible for children or pets. Some questions are:

  • Are your cleaning products ok to be used in a house with kids/pets?
  • What would you do if something was to break or gone wrong during the clean?

Feel free to use any scenario that is most likely to happen in your home. Simply having to answer a question about a hypothetical situation is stressful and how they handle the response is a great way to suss out their real-life reaction.

Discuss Their Sydney Cleaning Background and Their Future Plans

It’s not only enough to know that the housekeeper can do the work you also want to know where they have come through. Depending on how you ran the process, you may already have the housekeeper’s background information. If not, you could ask them to bring it with them to the interview, and they can talk you through it. Here, you’re trying to find out where they have worked before and of course, their reasons for leaving. While it is unlikely they will tell you if their performance was the reason for leaving, you can always verify this with a reference check. Questions you can ask are:

  • What would you like to be doing in a few years?
  • How have you grown in your role over the last few years?

As much as you want to know about their previous positions, you also want to get a sense of what they want from their future. It’s always good to know where someone sees themselves in a few years as it gives you a loose idea of how long you can hope to keep this particular working relationship.

Set Your Sydney Cleaning Schedule

The end of the interview is the perfect point to establish the logistical aspects of your housekeeper’s role. You want to know about how their work will fit into your life. You could ask:

    • When are you available to start?
    • Which days are you available to clean?

In addition to these questions, you can open it up to some questions for you. It is likely that the person you’re interviewing will have questions for you and this is an excellent time for you to provide the clarification they need.
